Master's Thesis Defense vs Dissertation Defense: Key Differences

How a master's thesis defense differs from a dissertation defense in what it tests, committee size, length, voting and retakes, using Ohio State, Washington and McGill rules.

The core difference in a master's thesis defense vs dissertation defense is what the committee tests. At Ohio State, the master's exam is "a test of the student's knowledge of the field", while the doctoral defense "tests originality, independence of thought". Committee size, required credits and what happens after a failed attempt also differ, and every school sets its own rules.

This guide compares the two levels point by point using named graduate schools' own policies. It then gives a preparation plan for each level. For the questions committees ask, see the guides to master's thesis defense questions and dissertation defense questions.

Master's thesis defense vs dissertation defense at a glance

Ohio State publishes both rules in one handbook, which makes it a clean comparison. The University of Washington adds a second view on credits and voting.

The time limits look alike at Ohio State, so do not assume a dissertation defense is always longer. What changes is the bar, the size of the committee, and how much research sits behind the document.

What each defense is testing

A master's committee checks that you know your field and used its methods soundly. A doctoral committee checks that you produced original work and can stand behind it on your own.

Ohio State's wording shows the shift. The master's exam is the final validation of performance for the degree and a test of field knowledge. The doctoral exam tests originality and independence of thought, the ability to synthesize and interpret, and the quality of the research.

In practice, this changes how big your claims should be. A master's answer like "this study adds evidence from one setting" fits the bar. A doctoral answer has to say what is new and why it holds up.

Who sits on the committee

At Ohio State the doctoral minimum is one member larger. A master's exam there needs at least two graduate faculty members, including the advisor, who chairs an oral exam.

An Ohio State dissertation committee has the advisor and at least two other graduate faculty. A Graduate Faculty Representative may also attend, and is required for second attempts. The representative is not a committee member, may ask at least one question, and records a vote on the fairness of the exam process.

At the University of Washington, at least four committee members must attend the doctoral final exam. They include the chair or chairs, the Graduate School Representative and one more Graduate Faculty member. For a master's final exam, Washington requires approval by a majority of the supervisory committee, and only if the program requires an exam.

Voting, retakes and what a failed attempt means

At Ohio State both levels need a unanimous vote, but the stakes of a second failure differ. A master's student who fails twice in the same program may not take another master's exam there.

A doctoral candidate who fails twice cannot remain a doctoral candidate in that program. The handbook lists two options: a master's degree in the current program, with program approval, or applying for a doctoral degree in another graduate program. At both levels the committee decides whether a second attempt is allowed and records it.

Before any of this, an Ohio State doctoral candidate must have completed the candidacy examination at least one semester before defending. If you are still before candidacy, the guide to a failed PhD qualifying exam covers that earlier hurdle.

How to prepare for each level

The preparation steps overlap, but the weight falls in different places. Use this plan to decide where to spend your time.

In Canada, and outside North America

In Canada the word is spelled "defence", and the levels can be examined very differently. McGill's thesis regulations describe one examiner for a master's thesis, from inside or outside the university, and do not mention a master's oral defence. Its doctoral oral defence committee has five or seven voting members (McGill regulations concerning theses).

In the UK, the same split is a master's viva against a PhD viva. The masters viva vs PhD viva comparison covers the QAA standards and UK university rules.

What Thesisroom does with this

Thesisroom reads the master's thesis or dissertation you upload. Its Defense Practice room writes questions an examiner or committee could ask, each tied to a specific passage or page of your own document, so the questions follow the claims you actually make.

You answer in writing or out loud, in one of three styles: Practice, Rapid round or Mock panel. Defense Practice does not write your answers or hand you a script, so the claim-sizing work in the table above stays yours.

Frequently asked questions

Is a master's thesis defense easier than a dissertation defense?

It tests a different bar. At Ohio State the master's exam tests knowledge of the field, while the doctoral defense tests originality and independence of thought. The time limit can be similar, so prepare for the standard rather than the clock.

Does every master's degree have a thesis defense?

No. At Ohio State the thesis option requires an oral portion, but the non-thesis option makes it optional. At Washington a master's final exam is required only if the program requires one. Check your program handbook.

How many people are on a master's thesis committee?

It depends on the school. Ohio State requires at least two graduate faculty members, including the advisor. Its dissertation committees need at least three. Your program may require more, so check its rules.

How long is a master's thesis defense compared with a dissertation defense?

At Ohio State both are capped near two hours. The master's exam should be under 2 hours with a talk of no more than half an hour. The doctoral exam lasts no longer than 2 hours, with at least one hour for committee questions.

What happens if you fail a dissertation defense twice?

At Ohio State a candidate who fails twice in the same program cannot remain a doctoral candidate there. The options listed are a master's degree in the program, with approval, or applying for a doctoral degree in another program.

Is a Canadian master's thesis defended orally?

Not always. McGill's thesis regulations describe one examiner for a master's thesis and do not mention a master's oral defence. Doctoral theses at McGill go to an oral defence committee of five or seven voting members.
